Social Media for leaders of small businesses is a daunting task. Recently I met with the owner of a small business with 3 employees, and she said, “Social Media sounds great, but it just seems so like so much, I don’t know how I can do it and get everything else done.” Just remember that you are attempting to share with your network information that will useful and educational to them.
Well we are here to help. It will take some work, but you can formulate a plan that enables you to monitor and determine how to engage with social media in only 15 minutes a day. By creating a solid routine, you will start to realize the benefits of Social Media for your business with increased traffic and lead generation.
Form A Social Media Plan
The first step is to set your goals and to arrange your tools. What are your goals – increased site traffic, thought leadership? New leads? Buzz around your business? Next you need to make sure you have your accounts set up and linked together. You want to have your blog ready to post, your Twitter account ready, and your Facebook page, LinkedIn profile, and Google+ account set up.
You also want to make sure that you have links between them so that your blog posts go to your Facebook page and your Twitter page, and your Twitter page will post to LinkedIn, Facebook, and Google+. Be sure to include your photo/logo, links to your website, and content about your business. Once it is all set up, determine the platforms to monitor. Obviously, you want to have Facebook Business Page, Twitter, LinkedIn Group Discussions and Answers, Quora, and Blogs. Finally, set up your RSS reader to receive the blogs and other feeds you want to watch regularly.
In order to facilitate monitoring you also want to streamline your process. The key will be to have a routine you follow most every day, at a time that will be convenient for you. For me personally, 15 minutes when I first start my workday works best. For others it might be lunch or the evening. Whatever the time is, you sit down and go through your platforms and track the pieces you want read and/or respond to.
